Key Points

  • Blood reserves too low for hospital demands; 233 donations cover only part of 500-unit needs.
  • November campaign: 1,423 visits, 223 new donors, slightly down from prior year due to scheduling.
  • New sites in Pas de la Casa and Sant Julià de Lòria; donations shared with Catalonia.
  • Appeal to youth for generational refresh; 2026 focus on social media promotion.

Vicky Marrugat, president of the Andorran Red Cross, has warned that blood reserves remain too low to cover hospital demands, making regular donations essential despite strong public response.

In an interview with the Andorran News Agency, Marrugat called blood collection a vital strategic focus for 2026. She noted that while the latest campaign from 9 to 21 November drew 1,423 visits and added 223 new donors, figures were slightly lower than the previous year. Scheduling mismatches with optimal times contributed to the dip, she explained.

To improve access, the Red Cross recently added collection points in Pas de la Casa and Sant Julià de Lòria. Marrugat praised the expansion but stressed it requires ongoing commitment to make a difference. Blood's short shelf life and rising needs from population growth exacerbate shortages; for instance, 233 donations from one drive might meet only part of demands nearing 500 units.

Donations from Andorra enter a coordinated system with Catalonia for processing and redistribution, rather than supplying local hospitals directly. In return, the principality receives blood from there.

Marrugat issued a special appeal to young people to refresh the donor base across generations. Looking ahead, the Red Cross aims to boost its social media presence in 2026 to promote donation benefits for recipients and donors alike. "We must do more to show young people what giving blood achieves for those who receive it and those who give it," she said.
