El Ròdol mental health facility has introduced a digital panic button to enhance security for its staff amid rising aggression towards healthcare workers.
Developed by BitMAYDAY, a company based in Vic, Spain, the tool allows healthcare professionals to alert colleagues and security personnel instantly with a single click if they face a risk or assault. Launched as a pilot at El Ròdol—a service under the Andorran Health Care Service (SAAS)—it could expand to other SAAS departments if successful.
Aggressions against medical staff are increasing across borders, including in Andorra, though cases here remain relatively contained. Mental health services like El Ròdol see elevated risks due to patient profiles, alongside emergency departments and nursing staff, which face the highest number of incidents.
BitMAYDAY stands out with its desktop and mobile apps, managed via a central web portal. Administrators can create alert subgroups, adjust real-time safety zones, and ensure full coverage for work teams. The system generates data and statistics on vulnerabilities—such as high-risk locations, incident types, and peak danger hours—to guide preventive measures.
It also automatically sends a questionnaire to affected workers to gather incident details.
Jordi Parareda, BitMAYDAY's founder, described the tool as a way to bolster workplace safety and wellbeing in high-risk environments. SAAS chose El Ròdol for the pilot given the potential for sudden aggression spikes, without intending to stigmatise any group.
