Encamp Advances Elderly Care with Retirement Home Expansion and New 120-Bed Residence
Local authority pushes forward Casal del Poble extension for autumn 2026 reopening and €17M geriatric facility opening 2027-2028, boosting.
Key Points
- Casal del Poble expands from 555m² to 1,695m²; reopens Q4 2026 after €70K furnishings.
- New 120-bed geriatric residence plus 30 day places; construction starts April/May 2025.
- €17M project funded by MoraBanc; 55% subsidized beds increase Andorra capacity to 336.
- Prioritizes Encamp residents; opens late 2027-early 2028 with 90% tax rebate.
Encamp's local authority is pressing ahead with two key elderly care initiatives: the expansion of the Casal del Poble retirement home, scheduled for inauguration in early autumn ahead of full operations in the final quarter of 2026, and a new 120-bed geriatric residence with 30 day centre places on Avinguda Príncep Benlloch, where construction is due to begin by late April or early May.
The Casal del Poble extension is progressing as planned, expanding the facility from 555 square metres to 1,695 square metres after works started in autumn 2024. Structural completion is expected by late September, followed by the installation of furnishings and equipment costing around €70,000. These include items for a new dining area, offices, living rooms, and sports gear such as a stationary bike and elliptical machine, with delivery set for 10-25 September. This will allow the centre to reopen after an 18-month closure, enabling the return of residents who were temporarily relocated. The project delivers on a core commitment by mayor Laura Mas and deputy mayor Xavi Fernández to triple the space and meet Encamp's long-term needs for its seniors.
In parallel, the €17 million geriatric residence—built on part of the former Prat Gran site—will be operated by Residencial Sènior, which runs three centres in Girona province. A tripartite agreement between MoraBanc, the parish, and the Social Affairs ministry secures subsidies for 55% of residential places (66 beds), boosting Andorra's total subsidised capacity from 270 to 336 and easing a waiting list of about 20 people. The initiative qualifies for a 90% construction tax rebate from the previous term, provided elderly care use continues for at least 10 years.
MoraBanc and co-investors from its private clients are funding the project fully. Private places will prioritise Encamp residents with three or more years in the parish, managed transparently via parish coordination. Officials outlined the plans at a Wednesday press conference attended by MoraBanc investments director Gerard Alba, Social Affairs minister Trini Marín, and mayor Mas. Marín described it as vital support for residential and day care needs. Mas said it would allow Encamp seniors to remain in their parish for life. Alba highlighted the private sector's contribution to social benefits. The facility is slated to open between late 2027 and early 2028.
