Key Points

  • Sex education should cover emotions, consent, boundaries, and respect alongside physical protection.
  • Children encounter pornography around age 8; teach them to view it critically as fiction.
  • Mandatory school programs needed, supplementing family efforts for consistency.
  • Equips youth for safer decisions, healthier relationships, and societal diversity.

Psychologist Mònica Martínez has emphasised the need for comprehensive sex education that addresses both physical and emotional aspects of relationships, moving beyond mere protection against pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Speaking in collaboration with the Associació Jovent en Risc (ADJRA), Martínez stressed that discussions about sex with children should occur naturally and respectfully. "Education must cover emotions, relationships, consent, boundaries, and respect, as these shape daily interactions," she said. She highlighted that such teaching equips young people to make safer, more informed decisions throughout their lives, fostering healthier relationships and a society more attuned to affective and sexual diversity.

A key concern is children's early exposure to pornography, which typically begins around age eight, according to a guide Martínez developed with ADJRA. She urged parents and educators to prepare children to view it critically, distinguishing fiction from reality. "Pornography is like a violent movie—unreal and not to be imitated in real life. Real sexual relationships often differ from what screens depict," she explained.

Martínez called for mandatory sex education in schools, combining efforts at home and in the classroom. While parental involvement would be ideal, she noted that schools provide a consistent setting, as families cannot be compelled to address the topic. Early, thorough education, she argued, is essential for children's emotional wellbeing and long-term respect in relationships.
