Two Spanish Thieves Jailed After Vehicle Break-In and Crash Chase in Sant Julià de Lòria

Police in Sant Julià de Lòria have imprisoned two Spanish men from the Costa Brava area, aged 19 and 24, following their arrest for stealing a backpack containing a laptop and jacket—worth over €2,000—from an unlocked vehicle at the Sant Antoni car park in Aixirivall on Monday evening. The Batllia issued firm prison orders, sending them to La Comella for several months along with subsequent expulsion, in a move described as exemplary amid public security concerns.

The theft occurred around 6:15pm when the owner and his son surprised the hooded suspects rummaging inside the car and alerted authorities. The trio fled in a Spanish-plated vehicle but crashed into parked cars shortly after, with only material damage reported. Pursued by the victims, one suspect became trapped inside and was detained at the scene by an off-duty officer as the first patrol arrived. The other two fled on foot.

A large-scale operation followed, deploying citizen security, traffic, and technical intervention units, police dogs, and an aerial drone across the parish and wider Principat. The second suspect was captured near the Fontaneda road junction, close to the Sol Park hotel. Stolen items were recovered from the crashed getaway car. Both detainees have prior records for similar offences in neighbouring regions; police are investigating potential links to other local thefts and continue hunting the elusive third suspect, who remains at large despite an order for national detention and possible international pursuit.

No injuries occurred in the incident.

In separate cases, a 29-year-old non-resident was arrested in Escaldes-Engordany for falsifying a work experience certificate to secure a residence and work permit, facing document fraud charges.

Additionally, a 52-year-old British tourist, hospitalised early Sunday after a leg injury from an altercation at a Soldeu nightclub, fled the hospital Tuesday morning around 11am. After removing his IV, he left in a wheelchair, aided by one of two younger companions, without signing voluntary discharge. Police activated a search protocol but have not located him or his associates, who had vacated their tourist apartment. Officers had found the intoxicated trio at the scene past 4am, arranging medical transport before the escape.
