Canillo Council Plans Meritxell Upgrades: New Parking, Old Town Revamp, and Power Line Burial

The Canillo parish council has outlined plans to enhance the Meritxell area, including a new parking facility, upgrades to the historic old town, and the burial of a low-voltage power line along the Meritxell path.

These initiatives were presented to local residents during a community meeting on Thursday afternoon. Council leader Jordi Alcobé led the session, explaining that the projects address on-the-ground needs to improve the village environment, particularly around the high-traffic Santuari de Meritxell.

The new parking area aims to ease vehicle congestion at sensitive spots during peak visitor days, boosting overall mobility. Work on the old town will preserve its heritage while adapting structures to modern requirements, retaining their traditional character.

On sustainable mobility, Alcobé highlighted the ongoing burial of the low-voltage electricity line on the Meritxell path, with initial works already underway by FEDA, Andorra's electricity distributor. He emphasised the value of restoring historic paths for contemporary use without compromising their essence.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to engaging residents, aligning projects with community input as part of its proximity-focused approach. Alcobé noted that these efforts strike a balance between development, heritage protection, and quality-of-life improvements in culturally and touristically significant areas like Meritxell.
