Encamp Parish Tenders €150K Overhaul for Leaky Plaça del Funicamp
The 10-week phased project will replace degraded waterproofing with a polyurea membrane and renew paving to protect the funicular building's lower levels from water infiltration.
Key Points
- Encamp parish tenders €150K project to overhaul Plaça del Funicamp's waterproofing and paving.
- 10-week phased works to replace degraded waterproofing with polyurea membrane over 500 sqm.
- 65% of square covers funicular building's roof; aims to stop leaks in lower levels including parking.
- Printed asphalt to renew 85% of paving, minimizing disruptions during ski season.
The Encamp parish council has tendered a 150,000-euro project to fully overhaul Plaça del Funicamp, addressing years of water leaks from the degraded waterproofing that have infiltrated the funicular building's lower levels, including parking and technical areas.
Technical assessments by the Infrastructure and Maintenance Department document recurrent infiltrations around downpipes, utilities, structural joints, and damaged edges across the 500-square-metre square. Roughly 65% of the area sits atop the concrete roof of the Funicamp building, while the remaining 35% spans a bridge over the Riu Aixec with reinforced concrete and metal elements. This busy urban hub handles heavy pedestrian traffic, especially during the winter ski season as the primary gateway to the ski domain, while connecting nearby commercial and service zones.
To limit disruptions, officials will execute the 10-week works in phases, maintaining safe access to the funicular. Contractors must demolish the current granite paving, strip intermediate layers and the old waterproofing, and stabilise structures to a sound base. A single continuous hot-sprayed polyurea membrane—chosen for its elasticity to handle differential movements—will then seal the entire surface.
The project also renews the paving: about 85% will switch to printed asphalt, preserving existing rubber sections and wooden decking. The tender aims for award next month, with completion targeted for early autumn. Parish authorities seek to eliminate leaks permanently and prevent further structural damage.
