Andorra Sees 34% Rise in Domestic Violence Cases to 189 in 2025

Police in Andorra recorded 189 domestic and gender-based violence offences in 2025, marking a 34% increase from the 141 cases the previous year, according to data released by the Statistics Department based on police figures.

Physical assaults were the most common, accounting for 40.7% of offences and reaching a total of 77—the highest since 2021 and up 26% from 2024. Cases involving psychological violence or a mix of physical and verbal abuse also rose sharply, each exceeding 50 incidents.

Overall police interventions for domestic matters totalled 759, down 3.3% from 785 in 2024. Of these, 74.7% related to general domestic issues, with gender-based violence making up 3.8% (29 cases) and domestic violence 6.2% (47 cases). No cases resulted in intentional homicide or murder, unlike the three recorded in 2024.

Authorities made 59 arrests for these offences, a 1.7% drop from the prior year. Over 86% involved physical violence, with men comprising 71.2% of detainees—42 in total, down from 46. Most detainees fell in the 30-39 age group (39%), followed by 22-29 (23.7%). Residents accounted for 72.9%, while non-residents made up 27.1% (16 cases, up from 11).

Victims in detention-related procedures numbered 61, slightly down from 62. They were concentrated in the 30-39 (31.1%) and 22-29 (27.9%) age brackets. Half belonged to non-Andorran nationalities, with Andorrans at 18%, Colombians at 16.4%, French at 11.5%, and Spanish and Portuguese each at 9.8%.

Elvira Geli, president of the Andorran Women's Association (ADA), attributed the rise to greater awareness. "People used to stay silent at home out of fear and shame. Now, with more information available, they are reporting more," she said. She noted many only contact police after verbal abuse escalates to physical violence and stressed the need for support spaces, especially for foreign women, whom the ADA assists through its information point. "They often have nowhere to talk. It's crucial they know they are not alone." Geli urged reporting or escaping aggressors.
