Andorra Police Probe Disappearance of Pyrénées Heir Jean-Louis Pérez in South Africa
Andorran authorities investigate the vanishing of 75-year-old Jean-Louis Pérez, heir to the Pyrénées empire, last located in South Africa. No contact since late March despite family worries and Interpol involvement.
Key Points
- Jean-Louis Pérez, 75, son of Pyrénées founders, missing since late March; daughter filed report weeks ago.
- Last contact placed him in South Africa retrieving family items; planned African consul role.
- Mobile and emails inactive; companion unreachable; Interpol and South Africa alerted.
- Unconfirmed reports of him safe in Dubai; pending Andorran court cases and prior Spain detention.
Police in Andorra are investigating the disappearance of Jean-Louis Pérez, the eldest of three brothers from the family behind the historic Pyrénées group, after one of his daughters filed a report several weeks ago.
The complaint followed days or weeks without contact from Pérez, around 75 years old, whose mobile messaging has not functioned since late March. Neither incoming nor outgoing messages are received, and he has not responded to emails. Family and associates last placed him in South Africa, where he reportedly intended to recover family belongings. He had also expressed plans to become honorary consul in Andorra for an unspecified African country.
Pérez, son of Pyrénées founders Georges Pérez and the late Jacqueline Pradère, had distanced himself from the family business. Relations with his three daughters have been complex, though he maintained regular contact with his youngest, who lives in France near Andorra. His female companion, with whom he spent time in Barcelona, is also unreachable.
Authorities activated Interpol channels and coordinated with South African officials, but have not determined if the absence is voluntary. As an adult, Pérez is free to travel without notice, and he frequently visited places like Saudi Arabia without fixed itineraries.
Some reports suggested Pérez had been located safe in Dubai, where he had recent business interests and travel plans including Namibia, Uganda, and the Middle East. However, police told media outlets they lack official confirmation of his whereabouts and continue inquiries.
Pérez faces pending legal matters in Andorran courts, both as plaintiff and defendant, and was briefly detained in Spain late last year under a French European arrest warrant linked to alleged fraud from 2018-2019, though few details emerged.
The situation has raised significant concern among family and contacts, given his pattern of sudden, unannounced trips.
