Key Points

  • 58-year-old tested positive at 0.97g/L blood alcohol, charged with DUI, fleeing police, and endangering safety.
  • Pursuit ended near Cervós stores in Andorra la Vella; released after court appearance Sunday.

A former Andorran minister and ambassador from Canillo, linked to the liberal governments, was arrested Saturday night after fleeing a routine alcohol checkpoint in Andorra la Vella. He accelerated away as officers approached his vehicle around 11:45pm, prompting a brief police pursuit through rainy streets until he stopped near the Cervós stores on Avinguda Salou.

The 58-year-old man, who has been out of politics for years, initially complied with the stop during the standard sobriety operation but sped off when police neared to request documentation and conduct tests. Officers described his high-speed driving as reckless, endangering himself and other road users amid the poor weather.

A breathalyser test showed 0.97 grams of alcohol per litre of blood—above the threshold requiring arrest, though sources noted it was not excessively high. He faced charges including a crime against public safety for driving under the influence, as well as for fleeing and disobeying police orders.

Police took him to their station, where he spent the night. He appeared before the batlle on Sunday morning, received a penalty, and was released the same day.

Authorities have not publicly identified the man.
