Andorra's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that its two registered residents in Colombia are safe following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the country's west on Monday, killing at least 82 people and causing widespread destruction.
The ministry contacted the individuals via the voluntary Travel Registry, designed to aid communication and assistance for Andorran citizens and residents abroad. Officials report no other registrants in the affected area.
The quake hit at 7:34 a.m. local time near San José del Palmar in Chocó department, per Colombia's Geological Service. Preliminary magnitude readings differed, with the US Geological Survey measuring 7.4 and Colombia's agency at 6.6. Aftershocks of 4.8, 3.3, 3.0 near San José del Palmar, and 2.8 in nearby Sipí followed.
Risaralda bore heavy losses, alongside casualties and injuries in Quibdó, Chocó's capital. In Cali, roughly 30 buildings collapsed. Manizales lost a cathedral tower, and multiple airports shut briefly for checks.
Rescue efforts face challenges from communication blackouts. The government offered condolences and support through a social media statement by Imma Tor Faus, listing the consular emergency line at +376 324 292.
President Abelardo de la Espriella announced he is overseeing the response, including a unified command center in San José del Palmar. Andorra's local community is monitoring updates amid worries for contacts there.
