Six Andorrans Safe in Indonesia After Deadly 7.7 Quake on Flores

Six Andorran citizens in Indonesia during a deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake on the island of Flores remain safe, the government has confirmed. All were registered in the Principat's Traveller Registry, enabling authorities to verify their wellbeing amid the disaster.

The quake struck the east of the archipelago early on Saturday, with its epicentre off Flores' coast. It triggered evacuations of around 2,000 coastal residents over fears of a sea-level rise, though no tsunami materialised. Landslides and aftershocks complicated rescue efforts, blocking roads and raising concerns for those trapped under debris.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports at least 47 deaths in a preliminary toll: 24 in Manggarai district, 17 in East Manggarai, three in Sikka, and one each in Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai. Officials have yet to confirm the full number of injuries or missing persons as ground assessments continue.

A second major tremor, magnitude 6.9, hit Sumatra island about 12 hours later, according to Germany's GFZ research centre. Early reports indicated no casualties or damage there.

Indonesia's location on the Pacific Ring of Fire accounts for its frequent seismic activity.

Separately, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook Granada and its surroundings in Spain that morning. The Andorran government reports no nationals in the area, with no serious injuries or structural damage recorded.
