The Andorran Red Cross's Solidarity Shop has recorded an 8% increase in users this year, currently aiding 128 people from 77 family units, including 37 minors, and has supported more than 170 family units overall.
Jordi Ribes, the organisation's director, shared these figures and stressed their significance in demonstrating the shop's impact. He explained that it provides essential supplies to those facing economic hardships who might otherwise go without. Most clients are referred by the Social Affairs department, while the Red Cross handles other services at full capacity, including high demand at the ARCA centre.
Ribes pointed to broader pressures, such as population growth and families devoting much of their income to housing, which strains resources for basics. Many households seek help directly before formal referrals.
To support the shop, Andorra la Vella parish is organising 'Rhythms and Solidary Movements' on 3 October in Plaça del Poble. This evolves previous Zumbaton events by offering varied activities to promote healthy habits, citizen engagement, and fundraising.
Cònsol menor Olalla Losada outlined the focus on sport, participation, and solidarity, with no experience needed. Registration starts at 10.30am with welcome packs. The schedule includes a barre session at 11am led by El Rato Barre House, Latin rhythms at noon directed by May Ortega of the Serradells sports centre, and tai chi at 1pm with the Kung-Fu Tai-Chi Club. The event ends at 2pm. Entry is €5, or visitors can donate without joining activities.
Ribes welcomed the initiative for both funds and raising awareness of growing social needs. Inscriptions are now open.
