The Andorran government has allocated €2.08 million in 2025 to support traditional mountain livestock farming practices, marking a 6.25% increase from the previous year's disbursements. This funding underscores the executive's commitment to the primary sector and a production model centred on pastoralism, which enhances meat quality and helps preserve the country's landscapes.
The latest tranche, approved as the second payment of the year, covers the period from 1 June to 30 November and totals €711,017.53. It will be distributed among 93 livestock operations nationwide. This follows the first payment of €1.37 million, released in August and tied to the stretch from 1 December 2024 to 31 May 2025. Together, the two instalments bring the full annual total to €2,084,419.15.
The subsidies incorporate regulatory updates approved in March 2024, designed to prioritise the Andorran Brown breed and align payment rates with current sector conditions. Amounts have also been adjusted for inflation based on the consumer price index, preserving farmers' purchasing power.
Eligibility targets holders of income-generating livestock operations—covering cattle, horses, sheep, and goats—with payments calculated per animal and per day spent in Andorra. Beyond economic support, the programme recognises pastoralism's role in landscape management and biodiversity conservation, while mitigating natural hazards such as fires, floods, and avalanches.
