Police in Andorra have confirmed that a Czechoslovakian wolfdog cross, roaming unleashed near Sispony cemetery in La Massana parish, mauled an eight-year-old non-resident boy's face on Friday, December 26, around 14:30. The boy, visiting family in the Principat, was walking a much smaller dog with his aunt when the 40kg beige animal approached alone and attacked after he tried to intervene.

Servei d’Urgències Mèdiques (SUM) provided initial treatment on site following a police alert at 16:21. The boy was first taken to Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital before transfer to Hospital de la Seu d’Urgell in Spain for specialized care, where he remains with severe wounds that tore tissue from one cheek. Medical reports indicate possible reconstructive surgery, potentially even for cosmetic reasons, depending on healing; further transfer to Barcelona has been mentioned if needed.

A police statement on Monday detailed witness accounts from the boy's mother and aunt, who described the dog as resembling a German shepherd—around 40kg and beige—and unaccompanied by anyone. Officers launched an immediate search, aided by rangers. On Saturday around 11:00, rangers reported spotting a matching crossbreed with a local woman caring for it temporarily. Police identified her as the 34-year-old Andorran owner's ex-partner or acquaintance, who had the dog for three or four days while he was abroad. They contacted the owner directly.

The dog is now under authority control. The owner faces a fine for allowing it unleashed and unmuzzled. Police continue investigating to establish full responsibilities, including potential classification as a dangerous breed and compliance with leash rules. Animal protection services are involved. No criminal complaint has been filed by the family, who are prioritizing the boy's recovery.
