Mossos d’Esquadra and La Seu d'Urgell Municipal Police are conducting preventive traffic checks until Wednesday, February 18, to boost road safety amid heightened activity during Carnival celebrations.
The operation, coordinated by the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), targets a reduction in road fatalities and serious injuries. It focuses primarily on combating driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while raising awareness among motorists about the associated risks and consequences. Officers are also working to ensure smoother traffic flow and overall mobility safety.
So far, eight drivers have received fines for various infractions detected during checks in La Seu d'Urgell, the capital of Alt Urgell. Alcohol and drug tests are carried out randomly at any time of day.
The SCT urges drivers to exercise maximum caution on all journeys, regardless of distance, and to avoid any alcohol or drug consumption before getting behind the wheel. It highlights the need to moderate speed—which can worsen injuries—stay attentive to the road, and follow all traffic rules.
Authorities emphasise that alcohol, drugs, and driving are entirely incompatible. Even levels within legal limits increase accident risks, with 0.0% confirmed as the only safe blood alcohol threshold.
