The renovation and expansion works at Encamp's Casal del Poble elderly centre are progressing steadily and are expected to finish before the end of the year, according to comú officials.

The project, which began in late 2024, is now entering its final phase after staying on schedule despite an earlier acceleration. The initial stage, running until mid-May 2025, focused on building a new wing. Work has since shifted to refurbishing the existing structure. This phased approach allowed elderly services—such as dining and leisure activities—to continue as long as possible at the original site in Plaça dels Arínsols. For the past nine months, these have operated from the former youth area premises near the Complex Esportiu i Sociocultural, with users set to return once complete.

This week, the comú launched a tender for supplying and installing furniture, including items for dining, rest, offices, and sports. Bids are due by 5pm on 19 March, with envelopes to open on 24 March, as published in the Butlletí Oficial del Principat d’Andorra. The contract is valued at around €70,000.

The expansion triples the facility's floor space from 554.35 square metres to 1,693.31 square metres across three storeys. The ground floor will feature a multipurpose room and an interior courtyard with natural light. The first floor will house the kitchen, dining area, lounge and rest spaces, a new intergenerational meeting room, and offices for the comú's social affairs department. The top floor will include classrooms for elderly leisure activities and a 222-square-metre terrace. Modular interior designs will allow rooms to be resized as needed.

Originating from the previous comú term under Cònsol Laura Mas, the project was unveiled publicly at a café in Plaça dels Arínsols in November 2023, just before local elections. Contracts were awarded in late September 2024 for €3.5 million.
