Sant Julià renovates Plaça Calonge and prepares Prat del Senzill park
Renovation of Plaça Calonge–Sant Antoni is entering its final phase with new trees, benches and the Subirachs Clio repositioned; the €376,000 scheme.
Key Points
- Plaça Calonge works near completion: trees and benches installed; Clio sculpture relocated for greater visibility.
- Project budget €376,000; contract awarded directly to Construccions Mouta after no bids in the public tender.
- Pedestrian-first changes: pavements extended into carriageway, barriers removed, underground bins and 1982 fountain taken out.
- Next phase: Parc del Prat del Senzill remodel (€755,836) — new pavements, landscaping, pumptrack and children's bike track; ~3 months of works.
Plaça Calonge–Sant Antoni in Sant Julià de Lòria now shows its new look as renovation works enter their final stage. Trees and benches have been installed and the Clio sculpture by Josep Maria Subirachs has been moved to a more visible location. Recent work on the pavements of Carrer Doctor Palau, behind the Hotel Pol building, has led to a temporary road closure with access limited to parking.
The project began after the summer with a budget of €376,000 and was awarded by direct contract to Construccions Mouta after the public tender received no bids. The reform stems from a participatory process and citizen input, and aims to make the area more open and to improve residents’ quality of life. Pavement has been extended to the carriageway to give priority to pedestrians; some architectural barriers have been removed; benches have been reorganised; underground rubbish containers have been eliminated following long-standing neighbourhood demands; and the 1982 fountain by Sergi and Roger Mas, which used mill wheels and river stones to channel water, has been removed.
The square is the core of the priority urban action area bounded by Carrer de les Escoles, Avinguda Francesc Cairat, Plaça Laurèdia and Plaça de la Germandat. With these works nearly finished, the Comú de Sant Julià de Lòria is now concentrating on remodelling Parc del Prat del Senzill, a project budgeted at €755,836.05 that covers new pavements, landscaping and the installation of play equipment.
The park project was launched early in the current mandate in response to deteriorating facilities and a shortage of green and leisure spaces in the parish centre. The first phase included collaboration with the 2023–2024 Children’s Council, which proposed the pumptrack opened on 13 October 2024. This phase also modifies parking arrangements and temporarily decommissions the toilet area and storage. Works are expected to last roughly three months.
The remodelling aims to make Prat del Senzill greener and more accessible, offering more comfortable and attractive leisure spaces. All old and damaged machinery will be removed by the end of the year to prepare the ground for the new installations. In addition to the pumptrack, a bike track will be added to provide children with a dedicated space to learn and practise cycling.
