Social Democrats Demand Government Memo on Carrer de la Unió Traffic Changes

The Social Democratic parliamentary group has submitted a written request to the government for the justifying memorandum on the recent mobility reordering along Carrer de la Unió (CG-3).

Susanna Vela, president of the group, initiated the demand, citing concerns over the changes to traffic flow that have sparked unease among local residents, citizens, and shopkeepers. The opposition party seeks detailed insight into the technical and political reasons behind the modifications, along with the government's stated objectives and anticipated benefits.

Vela stressed that any alterations affecting daily mobility require clear explanations of their motivations, goals, and expected impacts. She described transparency as a democratic requirement rather than an option.

The group argues that such a memorandum should outline the rationale for the proposed changes, the supporting criteria, and the intended outcomes. Access to this document is essential, they say, to assess whether the decision reflects rigorous and coherent mobility planning.

Vela further called for information on the studies underpinning the traffic reconfiguration and specific projected gains for traffic flow, safety, and economic activity in the area. She emphasised that mobility policies must stem from a comprehensive, technically grounded strategy serving the public interest, rather than ad hoc or poorly explained measures.

The Social Democrats maintain that significant traffic and road management actions demand accessible information, particularly when they could influence daily commutes, local commerce, and residents' quality of life.

One report noted the request was made during a parliamentary intervention the previous day, with the government obliged to respond and provide the supporting documentation.
