Progressistes-SDP Warns of Andorra's Housing Crisis and Social Divide at Assembly

Progressistes-SDP convened its general assembly over the weekend, analysing Andorra's political, economic, and social situation ahead of the next electoral cycle. The party highlighted the country's arrival at a "decisive stage" burdened by long-accumulated structural problems, including a housing crisis, rising living costs, and eroding purchasing power, which major political forces have failed to address with a coherent strategy.

Party president Josep Roig led the opening session on the current political context, spotlighting housing as the clearest case of inadequate anticipation. He explained that market trends were ignored for years as prices climbed, residential supply dwindled, and more families faced barriers to decent accommodation. "The problem did not arise suddenly. It is the result of decisions taken over years and also of decisions not taken when there was still room to act," Roig said. After 16 years in government, he added, Demòcrates cannot continue acting as mere "observers" of the country's challenges.

Delegates noted these pressures are fostering a troubling social fracture, with "two Andorras" emerging: one profiting from economic growth and another struggling to maintain dignified living standards. The party rejected turning public discontent into an electoral tool, with Roig warning on Saturday that "it is easier to build protest speeches than to assume governing responsibilities." Progressistes-SDP urged less political noise and more solution-building capacity.

The assembly called for elections to avoid becoming mere clashes of leaderships or slogans, instead focusing on Andorra's ability to meet social, economic, and institutional challenges while sustaining its shared project. Members expressed concern over the lack of deep debate on the country's model for coming decades and agreed to draft a reference policy document in the next months. This would outline their national vision and open paths for cooperation with other reformist sectors, promoting a transversal approach to build broad consensus and move beyond bloc politics.

The session ended with the unanimous election of the National Policy Commission for 2026-2029, chaired by Josep Roig and comprising organisation secretary Elisabet Zoppetti, general administrator Marian Sanchiz, and vocal members Alain Mateu, Cristina Montolio, Najim Aouraghe, Marc Latorre, and Àngel Subirats. The new team committed to amplifying the party's role in national debates, advancing responsibility, social cohesion, reformism, and the general interest.
