Andorra Withdraws School iPads After Pupils Access Porn via Google Flaw

Andorran authorities pulled all iPads from primary schools nationwide after a security gap in Google's policies let young pupils bypass filters and view explicit images on a classroom device. Fixes are underway with Google.

Key Points

  • Pupils at Santa Coloma school viewed sexual content on classroom iPad due to Google's unannounced policy changes bypassing SafeSearch.
  • Teacher reported incident last week; ministry withdrew all primary school iPads as precaution.
  • Technical teams working with Google to fix vulnerability; devices offline until September.
  • Reinforced locks added to other school computers to prevent access to inappropriate material.

The Ministry of Education has withdrawn all iPads from Andorran primary schools after pupils at the Santa Coloma Andorran school accessed sexual content through a vulnerability linked to recent changes in Google's security policies.

The incident involved two or three third-cycle primary pupils using one of the five classroom iPads allocated for group work. A teacher spotted them viewing illicit images mid-last week and promptly notified school management, who alerted the ministry, government sources confirmed.

In a communication to families, the ministry stated that the school's web filters functioned as intended to block inappropriate sites. Officials identified the issue as stemming from unannounced alterations to Google's policies, which created gaps in local restrictions and enabled users to bypass the SafeSearch image filter via the Google app on iPad.

Ministry technical teams, including the technology development area, are now collaborating directly with Google to restore the original safeguards and prevent minors from reaching unsuitable material. Additional measures include reinforced configuration locks on other school computers to ensure restricted browsing.

The withdrawal, implemented as a precaution a few days ago, will remain in effect through the end of the current term and into September, when authorities anticipate full restoration of secure filtering. No iPads will be used in primary classrooms until then, affecting all devices across the Andorran education system.
