Andorra Opens Final Valira River Walkway for Flood Safety and Access

Authorities inaugurated the final 157-metre stretch of the Valira River walkway on its right bank in Andorra la Vella on Wednesday, completing canalisation from Santa Coloma in Escaldes-Engordany to the parish and enhancing links to major sports facilities.

The pedestrian route runs from the Comella roundabout to National Stadium access, passing under the cauldron site for the Small States Games in May 2025. It connects with the recent Avenguda Salou footpath, which links the Communal Stadium to Els Serradells neighbourhood, and removes the need for a footbridge crossing near the national road.

The project preserves the natural riverbed through revegetation and renaturalisation, including new rocks to create trout shelters that aid breeding and fishing. It also features a new river access staircase. Territory and Urbanism Minister Raül Ferré highlighted completion of canalisation opposite the National Stadium, with a focus on safe pedestrian access while supporting trout populations.

Head of Government Xavier Espot described the walkway as a long-awaited initiative that strengthens flood protection—a priority since the 1982 disaster—while boosting leisure spaces. He said it reflects a new approach to engaging with the river and public areas that gain better accessibility. Consul major Sergi González called the river the parish's backbone and an axis for community life, noting government collaboration from the start and expecting increased use once both banks link up neighbourhoods and venues.

Josep Maria Cabanes, president of the Andorran Fishing Federation (FACIP), praised the riverbed changes for improving trout reproduction and angling access. He called the result spectacular and underscored the Valira's status as one of Europe's premier trout rivers, with fishing tourism a key economic driver for Andorra.

The total investment reached €1.146 million, with the government covering 86%—around €1 million—for canalisation, renaturalisation and revegetation. Andorra la Vella funded €146,000 for the walkway surface, stadium access improvements, railings, lighting and amenities. The work finished on schedule.
