Andorra's Espot Slams Opposition Leaders as Unfit to Govern

Xavier Espot, Andorra's head of government, has criticised opposition leaders Cerni Escalé of Concòrdia and Carine Montaner of Andorra Endavant for lacking the experience and teams needed to govern effectively.

Speaking on RTVA's Avui serà un bon dia programme on Wednesday, Espot warned that neither leader is ready to take charge, adding that the country would suffer if they did. He based his view on their political records, while stressing he respects their intellectual abilities.

Espot drew from his own path to leadership, recalling how he hesitated to run for head of government despite his background. Though young at the time, he had served eight years at the Secretariat of State for Justice, worked in Foreign Affairs, and held ministerial posts over two legislatures. This public service experience, he said, qualified him for the role's complexities.

Governing demands prior expertise and a strong, prepared team, Espot argued—qualities he sees missing in Escalé and Montaner. He also faulted their ideologies and political platforms as inadequate for Andorra's challenges.

Reflecting on his tenure, Espot admitted that more experience might have led him to different decisions in some areas. Still, he credited his success to surrounding himself with qualified ministers and secretaries of state from the start.

Espot defended his outspokenness, noting that his rivals criticise him freely and he has a duty to highlight what he sees as their shortcomings.

The remarks heighten tensions ahead of elections.
