Andorra la Vella to re-tender Calones centre façade works in 2026
Council will relaunch the renovation after repeated failed tenders, expanding the scope to attract contractors and addressing planning irregularities.
Key Points
- Multiple tender attempts (including two in the last mandate and one in May) received no offers.
- Allocation raised from €150,000 (2022) to €215,000 (2024); re-tender set for 2026 with broader refurbishment to attract builders.
- Works will fix 1960s building, exposed attic brickwork and other neglected elements; delivery expected within two years under Reviu.
- 2025 budget includes €100,000 for nursery climate control, contingent on thermal curtains’ year‑round performance.
The Andorra la Vella town council will re-tender the renovation of the Calones community centre façade in 2026 after previous calls received no offers. In the last mandate the council launched the works twice but both contests were declared void for lack of bids; a further call made in May of last year also failed to attract contractors.
To overcome that barrier, the council plans a broader refurbishment of the space, believing a larger, more ambitious project will be more attractive to local builders. The council first allocated €150,000 for the work in 2022; the 2024 budget raised that to €215,000. Council officials declined to confirm next year’s allocation when asked, but councillor for Social Affairs, Youth and Civic Space Maria Nazzaro said at the most recent council meeting there is a firm intent to proceed.
A comprehensive façade overhaul is considered urgent: the building dates from the 1960s and to date has only received limited, occasional interventions. The previous administration refurbished the kitchen, but other elements remain. The renovation will also address a minor planning irregularity: a section of the attic façade has exposed brick after wooden cladding was removed about three years ago and not replaced, contrary to municipal urban-planning rules.
The Calones centre provides sheltered flats for autonomous elderly people and a low-cost dining service. Its waiting list currently numbers about twenty people. The council expects that forthcoming affordable rental flats for older residents in the former Jaume I residence will help absorb this demand. The refurbishment project is expected to be delivered within two years under the Reviu programme led by the Housing department.
Separately, the 2025 investment plan includes funding for climate control at the municipal nursery school. Whether the system is ultimately installed will depend on the year‑round performance of thermal curtains fitted at the start of the summer, councillors said. The curtains have moderated temperatures during hot months; the council now needs to verify whether they also retain heat in winter. The 2025 budget includes €100,000 for a climate-control system, which has not yet been installed.
