Andorra la Vella's General Syndic, Carles Ensenyat, expressed confidence that abortion decriminalisation can be achieved during the current legislative term, despite recent comments from Pope Leo XIV complicating the process.
In an interview on Ràdio Nacional's *Avui serà un bon dia* programme, Ensenyat described the reform as a necessary step forward that requires persistent effort. He stressed the need for ongoing pressure from Andorrans to keep the issue at the top of the political agenda, arguing that success hinges on sustained insistence.
Ensenyat anticipates negotiations with the Holy See will prove fruitful, citing encouraging remarks from Cardinal Parolin during a previous visit to Andorra. He hopes an agreement can materialise within this legislative period, adding that efforts are underway to resolve any impasse.
The General Syndic acknowledged the pope's recent statements have narrowed the path ahead but insisted the door remains open. He suggested Pope Leo XIV may lack the full context on Andorra's abortion debate that his predecessor possessed.
Ensenyat emphasised broad support across the Consell General, Andorra's parliament, for prioritising the issue. "The entire Consell General is working along these lines, and I believe we will succeed," he said.
