The Catalan government has approved changes to Decree 12/2023, dated 24 January, paving the way for a new Pyrenees Emergencies Region to strengthen operational responses in the area.
The move addresses repeated requests from the Upper Pyrenees counties—Alta Ribagorça, Alt Urgell, Cerdanya, Pallars Jussà, and Pallars Sobirà—along with the Val d'Aran. These areas will form the new zone for handling accidents, rescues, and special operations. Previously, much of this territory fell under the Lleida Emergencies Region, from which it will now separate.
Government officials cited the need to bring management closer to Pyrenean communities, enhancing territorial coverage, response capabilities, and expertise. They highlighted the region's distinct geographical features, which differ sharply from Lleida's plains, and its demanding operational requirements.
This initiative forms part of a broader restructuring of the Department of Interior and Public Safety. The decree modifications aim to boost the efficiency, coordination, and responsiveness of the Generalitat Fire Brigade amid evolving operational, technological, and organizational demands.
The approval came this week, as reported by Ràdio Seu.
