Key Points
- DA has long advocated for Espai Capital to host international events and local activities.
- Cònsol Sergi Gonzàlez reversed stance on the venue within a year.
- National government funds 30-40% via former Cirque du Soleil budget.
- DA demands transparency on construction and 25-year private land lease costs.
Demòcrates per Andorra (DA), the opposition group on Andorra la Vella's municipal council, has expressed support for the Espai Capital project unveiled this week by the city authorities.
In a written statement responding to questions from *Altaveu*, the councillors described the multifunctional venue as a long-sought initiative they have consistently advocated. They highlighted its potential to host major international events and provide a large-scale space for activities involving residents of the parish and the country at large.
DA welcomed the shift in stance by current Cònsol Sergi Gonzàlez, noting that little more than a year ago he had publicly questioned the need for such a facility.
The opposition praised the national government's involvement, which will cover part of the costs—specifically, funds previously allocated to the annual Cirque du Soleil tent, estimated by Minister Torres at 30-40% of the total construction expenses for the venue.
"This is yet another case where the government has stepped in to support a project that benefits the parish and the country, much like the recent affordable rental housing at Cedre," the statement remarked.
However, DA called for full transparency on the project's final price tag. They stressed the need for clear accounts, encompassing not only the infrastructure itself but also the total cost of leasing the privately owned plot for the next 25 years.
