Jordi Vilanova, a former communal councillor for the past two terms, has been elected as the new president of Demòcrates' parish committee in Escaldes-Engordany. He succeeds current councillor Gemma Bofarull in the role, with the change formalised at a committee meeting on Wednesday evening.
Xavier Ferri has also taken over as secretary, replacing Pere Moles. Vilanova expressed enthusiasm for the position, describing his approach as one of "great excitement and a strong sense of responsibility."
His immediate priorities include strengthening communication and affiliate participation, while providing support to communal councillors to carry out their duties effectively. The committee faces significant challenges ahead, particularly in preparing for upcoming elections: municipal polls in December next year and general elections initially scheduled for spring 2027.
Vilanova emphasised the goal of "recovering" Escaldes-Engordany, a key parish for the party, following four recent electoral setbacks. These include losses in the 2019 and 2023 territorial elections, as well as the municipal votes in both years—narrow defeats by just over 90 votes in the latest, compared to seven previously.
He stressed the need to assume responsibility, analyse mistakes and avoid demotivation. Work on potential candidates must begin soon, given the national elections are just 14 months away.
Vilanova defended Demòcrates' record during its last time governing the parish (2016-2019, when he served as a councillor), highlighting achievements such as the Vivand project and leaving the commune in strong financial shape. He dismissed criticism over tower block authorisations, noting similar approvals under the current administration.
