Social assistance €327.16m in 2024; cash benefits dominate

The SEEPROS integrated accounts published by the statistics department show that social assistance totalled €327.16 million in 2024. Of that sum, €288.58 million was paid out as social benefits, with cash benefits overwhelmingly dominant at €281.76 million and benefits in kind amounting to €6.82 million. These benefits cover risks and needs including illness, disability, old age, unemployment and family support.

Funding for the system came almost entirely from resident institutional units — enterprises, public administrations, households and non‑profit institutions — which contributed €327.11 million. The rest of the world contributed €50,676. The integrated accounts, compiled under the SEEPROS framework, allow for international comparison of financing and benefits.

The system also recorded €31.16 million in administration costs and €7.41 million in other expenses, including rents and transfers. Together, the figures underline the economic and social significance of the protection system and the central role of monetary benefits in covering households’ main risks.
