The Social Democratic Party (PS) announced on 4 December 2025 that Maria del Carmen (Carme) Garcia Oliva, a member of the party’s executive in Encamp, has died at the age of 57. Local media reported she died at her home in Encamp on Wednesday night after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Her family has said there will be no public wake and that she will be cremated in private on Friday afternoon. Born in Barcelona in July 1968, Garcia Oliva had lived in Andorra since childhood.

Garcia Oliva was active in parish-level politics and coordinated the PS local committee in Encamp in 2023. She also featured on PS electoral lists that year and took part in the Avancem slate in the Encamp communal elections.

A trained psychologist and qualified nurse, she worked in the mental health unit of the Andorran Health Care Service (SAAS) and taught subjects related to psychology and community health at the University of Andorra. She held a degree in psychology from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and a nursing diploma from the University of Andorra, and had a master’s degree in clinical, legal and forensic psychology from the Complutense University of Madrid. She was accredited as a forensic psychologist by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia and was undertaking further postgraduate study in child and adolescent psychology. Her professional training also included bereavement and palliative home care, sexual and couples therapy, and integrative laughter therapy and relaxation techniques.

The PS paid tribute to her commitment to health and social policy, expressing condolences to her family, friends and party colleagues and thanking her for “working tirelessly for a better country.”
