Andorran swimmers Biel Cuen and Kevin Teixeira placed 30th and 31st in the men's 800m freestyle heats at the European Swimming Championships in Paris.
Cuen competed in the first of four heats, finishing second after a close duel with Bosnia's Filip Kuruzovic that was decided in the final 50 metres. He recorded 8:19.67, 37 seconds behind the fastest overall time but more than 10 seconds quicker than his previous personal best. This marked a strong improvement for the Andorran, who edged out Teixeira by nine seconds.
Teixeira swam in the second heat, taking penultimate position with 8:28.16—well off his Andorran record of 8:12.64—which left him in 31st place overall.
The results came on the second day of Andorran action at the championships. Cuen expressed satisfaction with his milestone but felt he could have gone faster. Teixeira noted good sensations in the water despite missing his target, looking ahead to upcoming events.
The Andorran Swimming Federation delegation has a rest day scheduled today before Cuen and Teixeira return for the 200m freestyle tomorrow.
