Andorra la Vella welcomed the Special Olympics Tarragona 2026 flame on Tuesday evening

Andorra la Vella hosted the torch relay for the Special Olympics Tarragona 2026 on Wednesday evening, its sole stop outside Catalonia ahead of the games.

The flame travelled through city streets starting at 6pm from Plaça de la Rotonda, proceeding along Avinguda Meritxell, Carrer de les Canals and Carrer Doctor Nequi before reaching Plaça del Poble. There, participants read a manifesto in support of inclusive sport. The event drew athletes, volunteers, local entity representatives and communal council members, with free public access. Speeches took place afterwards at the Andorra la Vella Congress Centre.

Prominent figures included taekwondo athlete Naiara Liñán and former FAA athlete Cristina Llovera, who accompanied the flame alongside Andorran athletes.

Eleonor Castillo, first vice-president of the Spanish Special Olympics Federation, said the events benefit athletes while changing community views on people with intellectual disabilities.

The relay builds on Andorra's links to the games, following the 2018 joint hosting with La Seu d'Urgell, and forms part of a wider tour across Catalan municipalities to promote inclusion through sport.

The Special Olympics Tarragona 2026 are scheduled for 9-12 October, featuring 1,700 athletes from ten European countries in 15 disciplines, backed by more than 500 volunteers.
