Andorra to Boost Sports Subsidies and Ease Job Access for Elite Athletes

The Andorran government plans to increase subsidies for sports federations in the 2027 budget while introducing measures to ease elite athletes' access to public sector jobs, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Mònica Bonell has confirmed.

Federations have submitted their funding proposals, with the department now evaluating them. Bonell said the executive aims to boost the subsidies, with public details on revised categories and amounts expected within about a month, or by year-end at the latest.

Bonell also highlighted plans to amend the Public Function Law, building on existing provisions from a prior legislature. Current rules already award merit points to athletes with standout careers when applying for administrative posts. The proposed changes would further simplify access for those representing Andorra at top events like the Olympics, offering stability after years of sacrifice. "This provides reassurance," she noted, targeting elite competitors.

State Secretary for Youth and Sports Alain Cabanes echoed the sentiment, stressing that athletes should focus on their careers without uncertainty over the future. He said job stability brings "tranquillity."

These initiatives complement a new athlete guidance programme, developed with the Consell d'Orientació Educativa i Professional. It offers career support beyond performance, aiding transitions for high-performers. The efforts underscore broader commitments to bolster sports resources and infrastructure.
