The Andorran Swimming Federation (FAN) has wrapped up 2025 with a strong performance, including 28 new absolute national records set over the course of the year.
This achievement builds on recent progress in the sport, complemented by solid results at the Small States Games held in Andorra in May, where national swimmers claimed seven medals. A standout milestone came when, for the first time, an Andorran swimmer broke the eight-minute barrier in the 800m freestyle. The mark was improved three times during the season—twice in short-course pools and once in long-course—with Kevin Teixeira and 18-year-old Biel Cuen leading the breakthroughs.
Cuen set the new short-course national record at 7:56.29, shattering the previous benchmark of Pol Arias from a decade ago by more than 14 seconds. This progress underscores the rising standards in Andorran swimming.
FAN technical director Alfonso Maltrana described the year-end as particularly successful, noting that the team overcame initial uncertainties following the Small States Games. "We have broken absolute Andorran records as well as age-group records," he said, adding that the federation had surpassed "invisible barriers" in the sport. These advances now position Andorran swimmers to compete at a higher level.
Maltrana emphasised the federation's focus on long-term planning to prepare athletes for senior competition, including opportunities to train abroad. Cuen, for instance, currently trains with CN Sant Andreu in Spain under a FAN agreement. The young swimmer expressed satisfaction with his records and aims to push the times even lower moving forward.
