Simon Yates, the reigning Giro d'Italia champion and Andorran resident, has announced his immediate retirement from professional cycling at age 33.
The British rider, who won the Giro at Sestrière seven months ago, shared the news through his team, Visma-Lease a Bike. He described the choice as "very carefully considered," adding that he feels it is "the right time to step aside."
Yates ends a 17-season career at the elite level, highlighted by his recent Giro triumph and a Tour de France stage victory last year. Earlier achievements include the 2018 Vuelta a España podium, victory in the Tirreno-Adriatico general classification, and 11 stage wins in Grand Tours. The Bury native often raced alongside his twin brother Adam.
Visma-Lease a Bike coach Jesper Mørkøv told a Danish outlet that he respects the decision, noting Yates had lost his drive to compete.
