Andorran skier Álvar Calvo won the FIS slalom race at Candanchú, clocking a winning time of 1:28.08 to finish ahead of Spain's Javier Fernández in second and Pirmin Estruga in third. Calvo also improved his FIS points ranking with the performance.
Several other Andorran competitors placed strongly in the top 10, including Salva Cornella in sixth, Àlex Comellas in eighth and Carlos Salinas in ninth. Max Black led after the first run but ended fifth overall.
In the women's category, Ainhoa Piccino climbed from seventh after the opening run to claim fourth place. Isabella Pérez and Carlota Comellas were unable to complete their second runs. Another slalom race is scheduled for tomorrow at the same Spanish resort.
In a separate event, Andorran telemark skier Lucas Pagès finished 14th in the classic race at the World Cup stop in Pra Loup, France. Errors in his first run cost him time, but he recovered ground in the second to post a final mark of 2:22.87.
