Andorran skier Íria Medina claimed 15th place in the first FIS giant slalom of the Gran Premi Itàlia in Sestriere, Italy, on Monday, marking a strong performance amid numerous withdrawals.

Medina posted a combined time of 2:10.89, finishing 2.06 seconds behind winner Lara Baumann of Switzerland, who clocked 2:08.83. She skied solidly in the first run despite a mistake on the lower wall, provisionally placing 16th at 1.19 seconds off the pace. In the second run, she recorded the 18th fastest time, 1.31 seconds back, to climb one spot overall.

The result caps a busy weekend for Medina on the same Sestriere course. She had placed 46th in Saturday's second Europa Cup giant slalom, improving from 55th in the first run with the 35th quickest second-run time for a combined 2:01.51—5.63 seconds off Europa Cup winner Sue Piller and 2.77 seconds outside the points in 30th.

Coach Ibon Mintegui praised the effort but noted room for improvement: Medina skied well in the first run apart from the wall error, while the second lacked rhythm there. "Tomorrow we have another race and another chance, and as always, we're going for it," he said.

Medina faces the second FIS giant slalom on the same piste on Tuesday.
