VPC Andorra's men's team suffered a crushing 22-24 defeat to league leaders Getxo Rugby in their latest promotion playoff match at the Estadi Nacional, leaving them with three losses from three games and bottom of the table.
The Andorrans dominated much of the contest, leading 22-17 at half-time after a spectacular solo try from Gastón González. Mateo Macchi opened the scoring with a penalty in the opening seconds (3-0), matched by Getxo four minutes later (3-3). Adrià Casals crossed for a try in the 14th minute, converted by Macchi for 10-3, before Getxo's centre Weich replied to level at 10-10. Fede Aguiar then scored for VPC, with Macchi's conversion making it 17-10; Getxo's forward Harewood hit back immediately for 17-17.
The first half was halted around the 10-minute mark when Galdric Calvet suffered a concussion and was stretchered off to hospital by ambulance.
In the second half, VPC adopted a controlled approach to protect their lead, though Macchi missed a long-range penalty. Getxo, down to 14 men after a yellow card, capitalised late when Macchi received his own yellow. In the final play, Asier Aguirre touched down for 22-22, with Tobio converting after the whistle to seal the win.
The result leaves VPC facing an uphill battle ahead of matches against Malta and CAR Sevilla.
Meanwhile, the VPC women's team ended their season with a 28-6 semi-final loss to regular-season winners Cornecruc in Cornellà. Xènia Torres scored all VPC points with two penalties, but an early yellow to Salma left them short-handed. Cornecruc added further tries and penalties after the break. Coach Jordi Fidalgo's side, hampered by a small squad of just two substitutes against eight for the hosts, competed gamely but bowed out. Cornecruc advanced to face CN Poble Nou in the final.
