Key Points

  • Passed medicals with MoraBanc Andorra; joins on loan from Unicaja until end of season.
  • Already training; possible debut vs. Hiopos Lleida at Pavelló Toni Martí.
  • Averaged 17 PPG in LNB Pro A (2nd in league); played EuroCup with JL Bourg.
  • Fills point guard role vacated by Ferran Bassas; Bosnian passport avoids non-EU status.

Xavier Castañeda, the 25-year-old American guard holding Bosnian nationality, has passed medical tests with MoraBanc Andorra and joined the team on loan from Unicaja until the end of the season.

The 1.84m player from Illinois is already training under coach Joan Plaza and could make his debut this afternoon in the home match against Hiopos Lleida at Pavelló Toni Martí—the same opponent that rejected his proposed loan days ago over medical concerns. His Bosnian passport ensures he does not count as a non-EU player. Castañeda fills the point guard role vacated by Ferran Bassas, though he can also play shooting guard, leveraging his ball-handling and perimeter shooting to open up the floor.

Unicaja signed him last summer, where he featured in the Supercopa Endesa, Basketball Champions League, Liga Endesa, and FIBA Intercontinental Cup—a title his parent club claimed. After college careers at the University of South Florida and University of Akron, he moved to Europe with GS Lavrio in Greece for the 2023/2024 season, then broke out at JL Bourg Basket in France. There, he averaged 17 points per game in LNB Pro A—second in the league—while competing in the EuroCup.

MoraBanc Andorra general manager Francesc Solana welcomed the addition, noting Castañeda's talent in France despite an injury impacting his early form this season. "We see him as a strong complement at point guard after Bassas's departure," Solana said. "He can provide direction and scoring when the team needs it most, and he views this Andorra move as a key opportunity."
