A car fire broke out on Thursday afternoon on the CG-1 near the Margineda roundabout in Santa Coloma, prompting emergency response and traffic diversions.
The vehicle, a red Mini Cooper with an Andorran licence plate, ignited while travelling northbound. Witnesses alerted the driver to smoke coming from the front end, allowing him to exit unharmed before flames spread from the engine, completely destroying the car. Firefighters confirmed no injuries occurred in the single-vehicle incident.
Three police patrols and two fire crews, including a fire truck and an extrication vehicle that was not needed, attended the scene. The firefighters extinguished the blaze and managed a fuel spill, with operations lasting around 40 minutes. Police and traffic services from Andorra la Vella controlled the area.
Traffic faced significant disruptions, with the Mobility Department setting up a temporary two-way diversion towards Sant Julià. This caused lengthy queues from Sant Julià to the Margineda roundabout and between Santa Coloma and the site. Circulation returned to normal once the vehicle was cleared and the road cleaned.
Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the fire.
