4.5km Traffic Jams Hit La Massana Entrance for Second Day Due to Anyós Road Closures

Severe congestion returned to La Massana on Wednesday as stabilisation works closed the Anyós road near Balmoral, restricting heavy vehicles and forcing diversions via CG-3 and L'Aldosa amid peak hours.

Key Points

  • Traffic jams up to 4.5km formed at La Massana entrance on Wednesday from Anyós road stabilisation works.
  • Road partially reopened to cars in afternoon; heavy vehicles restricted to CG-3 and L'Aldosa diversion.
  • Tuesday's full closure caused 10-15min trips to extend to 45+ minutes, overlapping Andorra Epic bike race arrivals.
  • Diversions part of larger L'Aldosa urban project set for completion next year.

Traffic jams of up to 4.5 kilometres returned to the entrance of La Massana on Wednesday, marking a second consecutive day of severe disruptions from closures on the Anyós road near the Balmoral building.

The latest closure, part of stabilisation works on the route's retaining structures, prompted heavy congestion around the Pont dels Dos Valires roundabout, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Authorities partially reopened the road to passenger cars from early afternoon, while restricting access for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to ease the pressure on the CG-3 and L'Aldosa diversion. Andorra Mobility services noted the build-ups, with drivers reporting frustration over limited advance notice despite the planned nature of the works.

The situation echoed Tuesday's full closure, which ran from 9am to 8pm and caused the heaviest delays for commuters from Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany and other central areas heading to La Massana, Arinsal and Valls del Nord parishes. Typical 10-15 minute trips stretched to 45 minutes or more, with some drivers facing over an hour to reach the parish entrance. Midday traffic was also intense, and circulation did not fully normalise until after 8pm on both days.

Tuesday's shutdown overlapped with arrivals for the Andorra Epic mountain bike race, whose participants trained in Anyós through July 5. The works follow a recent incident at the same site where fibre optic cables were severed, cutting internet service in parts of the area.

The L'Aldosa diversion, approved by the government to bypass La Massana centre amid rising resident numbers in the northern parishes, forms part of a larger urban project due for full completion next year, including lanes for cars and delivery vehicles.
