Andorra Forecasts Stable 1M+ Vehicle Entries This Summer with Enhanced Traffic Plans
Andorra's Mobility department predicts steady summer traffic at 1.03 million vehicles, mirroring last year. New measures include dual lanes at borders during peaks and boosted night bus services for festivals to ease congestion.
Key Points
- Total projected entries: 1,032,000 from July 6 to Sept 13, matching last year's 1,031,393.
- Peak in August at 470,000 vehicles; dual lanes activate at Spanish border for peaks.
- Night buses ramp up for festivals, with frequencies every 20-30 min and extended hours to 5am.
Andorra's Mobility department expects stable vehicle entries this summer, forecasting 1,032,000 from July 6 to September 13—nearly identical to last year's 1,031,393.
August remains the peak month with 470,000 vehicles and daily highs up to 17,000, primarily through the Spanish border (290,000) and French border (180,000). July projections stand at 390,000 entries—255,000 from Spain and 135,000 from France—with daily maximums of 14,000. September's first half anticipates 172,000 vehicles as volumes decline, though one estimate suggests up to 232,000 for the full month.
Carles Miquel, director of Energy and Transport, presented the traffic management plan on Tuesday, noting a "basic stability" in current trends based on historical data. The measures activate Monday at the Spanish border on the Runer river, opening dual inbound lanes northbound along Avinguda Francesc Cairat in Sant Julià de Lòria during peak morning hours. Afternoons will use dual southbound lanes from the Comella roundabout to Margineda for outbound flows.
Inbound peaks run from 10am to 2:30pm from Spain and 9am to 12:30pm from France. Outbound pressures hit 4pm to 8pm toward Spain and 2pm to 7pm toward France. The approach mirrors last year's successful setup, with close collaboration among Andorran police, local traffic agents, and security forces from Spain and France. Miquel emphasized "total coordination" at the Spanish crossing, triggered as required by the National Traffic Centre, and dismissed any controversy over lane changes.
Night bus services will intensify for major festivals, following last summer's strong performance: typical usage of 500-800 passengers rose to 1,000-1,500 nightly, peaking at 2,000 during Sant Julià de Lòria festivities. Frequencies will rise to every 20-30 minutes during key windows, with hours extended to early morning and routes expanded to more events.
Reinforcements start July 3-4 for Ordino's Roser, with BN3 line service every 30 minutes until 5:40am, adding direct Ordino-Escaldes-Engordany links. Similar schedules apply July 10-11 for Massana's Roser (until 5:10am), July 17-18 for Canillo (BN1 and BN2 lines until 5:10am), and July 24-25 for Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany (BN3 until 5:10am).
