Driver's Medical Episode Causes Crash Through Barriers Near Andorra's Valira River

A driver experienced a medical episode and lost control of his vehicle on the CG-2 road near Ràdio Andorra in Encamp, causing it to veer off course, break through barriers and slide down an embankment close to the Valira river.

Police received the alert at 13:24 on Thursday, with the incident unfolding shortly after on the old CG-2 stretch. The Andorra-registered Mazda3 had just exited a roundabout ahead of the Ràdio Andorra tunnel during its descent. Rather than entering the tunnel, the car continued straight onto a side road toward Andorra Turisme facilities, where other vehicles were parked. It crashed through safety barriers and came to rest near the riverbank without plunging into the water.

The male driver exited the vehicle unaided and at first refused medical attention, believing himself unharmed. Firefighters and paramedics evaluated him on site before transporting him by ambulance to hospital—not for crash-related injuries, but to identify the underlying health issue that prompted the loss of control. Authorities suspect an epileptic seizure or comparable condition.

Encamp traffic police, regular police and firefighters responded swiftly, managing light traffic on the secondary road. A crane team later retrieved the suspended car from its precarious position by the riverbed. Officials have emphasised the health factor over the relatively minor vehicle damage.

In the vicinity, police also discovered a damaged motorcycle, believed to belong to a local services worker. It had been parked there, and investigators are examining a possible hit-and-run by an unknown party, with no established connection to the main incident. Encamp traffic agents are pursuing inquiries into both cases.
