The protest, under the banner “Our safety cannot wait”, responds to nearly 16 years of unfulfilled demands dating back to 2010. Locals view the national road as a dangerous divide, hindering safe access to La Seu d’Urgell for schoolchildren, workers, public transport passengers and others on foot. Children and elderly residents face particular risks without a secure crossing.
La Seu d’Urgell council approved the project in 2024 at a cost of nearly €70,000, yet no work has started two years on. Neighbours blame unresolved land issues with a private owner, alongside administrative delays. They argue that improving living conditions should not mean indefinite postponement and insist safe passage over a national road is a right, not a privilege.
Organisers reject further delays and criticise the council for lacking leadership. They call for urgent resolution of remaining obstacles and a firm public schedule for tendering and construction.
During the blockade, protesters plan to read a manifesto urging immediate action after 16 years of advocacy. “We are not prepared to accept more postponements,” they said.
