Andorra Police Arrest 55 in Drink-Driving Crackdown After 1,711 Checks

Police in Andorra arrested 55 people during a summer campaign against drink-driving and drug use on the roads, following 1,711 checks across the national road network.

The initiative unfolded over two phases: 4 to 26 July and 1 to 16 August. Among those detained, 51 registered positive alcohol levels above the criminal threshold of 0.87g/l, while four refused breath or drug tests. Officers handed out 27 administrative fines for readings below that limit. Two more drivers—one a 24-year-old tourist and the other a 46-year-old cross-border worker—tested positive for drugs.

Alcohol levels among those arrested ranged widely: 15 between 0.87 and 1.20g/l, 19 from 1.21 to 1.60g/l, 11 from 1.61 to 2.00g/l, and six above 2g/l. The peak reading of 2.98g/l came from a scooter driver. Three detainees had been in accidents: two in collisions causing property damage and a motorcyclist who crashed after losing control, testing at 2.16g/l with injuries.

Of the 55 arrested, 44 were local residents, eight tourists and three cross-border workers. Men made up 51 cases, with four women. By age, six were 18-25, 20 aged 26-40 and 29 over 40.

The figures exclude one driver charged in a fatal crash on 1 August, who tested positive but was arrested on 17 August after leaving hospital.

Police described the checks as a key tool to raise awareness of the dangers of mixing alcohol or drugs with driving, aligned with the Ministry of Justice and Interior's action plan. The force aims to cut road incidents through such efforts. Two further campaigns are scheduled for the second half of 2026.
