The Department of Statistics has reported a 3% decrease in temporary worker hiring for the 2025-2026 winter season compared to the same period last year, with 155 fewer authorisations approved as of 18 April 2026.
A total of 5,069 authorisations have been granted against an initial quota of 4,995, pushing overall quota consumption to 101.5%. This includes 1,215 permits for EU workers, representing 105.4% of their initial quota, and 3,854 for non-EU workers, at 100.3% of theirs.
On 15 October 2025, the government approved five special quota regulations for winter seasonal activities. The initial quota breakdown covered 34 EU frontier workers, 1,119 non-frontier EU workers, and 3,842 non-EU workers, though these figures serve as guidelines rather than fixed limits.
Sector-specific trends show mixed results. For ski piste staff, EU worker hiring rose 10% from the previous season, while non-EU hiring dipped 0.1%. In hospitality, EU contracts increased 24.5%, but non-EU ones fell 10.9%. Ski rental saw EU hiring double, up 100%, and overall non-EU labour consumption declined 8.5%.
As of 18 April, non-EU quota use dropped 8.8% year-on-year, with 371 fewer permits, while EU quota use climbed 21.6%, adding 216 permits.
