Portugal's Consul in Andorra Pushes for Business Delegations to Boost Trade

Portugal's consul general in Andorra, Duarte Pinto da Rocha, has called for strengthened economic ties through reciprocal business missions to promote trade and investment between the two countries.

In comments to the Andorran News Agency, Pinto da Rocha highlighted "a very wide field of expansion possibilities" in bilateral relations. He emphasized opportunities to increase commercial exchanges and investment flows, urging direct contacts between businesses alongside support from chambers of commerce and ministries to pinpoint projects and participants.

The diplomat pointed to a 2024 Andorran business delegation to Portugal, headed by Minister of Presidency, Economy, Labour and Housing Conxita Marsol, as a model for collaboration. Economic topics also featured in the May 20 meeting between Andorran head of government Xavier Espot and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during the latter's official visit to Andorra. Those talks raised the prospect of a return mission, this time with a Portuguese group visiting Andorra, though plans are not yet finalized.

Pinto da Rocha stressed the shared commitment to linking entrepreneurs directly for fresh business prospects. Key sectors include tourism, where Portugal's expertise in training, hotel operations, and practices could aid Andorra's efforts to broaden beyond skiing. Visitor exchanges remain modest, especially Andorrans traveling to Portugal, but coordinated promotion might change that.

Portugal's position as Europe's top exporter of advanced bicycles—hybrids, electrics, and high-tech models—offers potential amid Andorra's rising interest in mountain biking and cycle tourism through shops, fairs, and events.

Other areas encompass premium Portuguese agri-food items such as wines and olive oils for Andorran outlets, dining, and lodging. Portuguese companies already contribute notably to services, housing, infrastructure, and road projects in the Principat.
