Portugal's Consul in Andorra Pushes for Business Delegations to Boost Trade

Portugal's consul general in Andorra, Duarte Pinto da Rocha, sees significant room to expand economic relations with Portugal through new business missions that foster trade and investment.

Speaking to the Andorran News Agency, Pinto da Rocha described the ties as offering "a very wide field of expansion possibilities." He advocated for deeper bilateral cooperation, including direct contacts between companies to boost imports, exports, and investments. He suggested involving chambers of commerce and relevant ministries to identify interested businesses and support emerging projects.

Pinto da Rocha recalled a 2024 Andorran business delegation to Portugal, led by Minister of Presidency, Economy, Labour and Housing Conxita Marsol, to explore opportunities. Economic issues also arose during the May 20 meeting between Andorran head of government Xavier Espot and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, held amid the latter's official visit to Andorra. That discussion included ideas for reciprocal missions, potentially with a Portuguese group traveling to Andorra, though details remain to be finalized—possibly in the coming months or next year.

Among high-potential areas, tourism stands out. Portugal, a major European destination, could share expertise in professional training, hotel management, and best practices to help Andorra diversify beyond winter sports. Tourist flows between the countries are currently limited, particularly Andorrans visiting Portugal, but joint marketing campaigns could increase them.

Portugal's bicycle sector presents another opportunity as Europe's leading exporter of high-tech, hybrid, and electric models. While Portuguese brands have limited presence in Andorra, growth in mountain biking and cycle tourism could open doors via specialized retail, trade fairs, events, and related initiatives.

Additional prospects include mid-to-high-end agri-food products like Portuguese wines and olive oils for Andorran retail, restaurants, and hotels. Portuguese firms already have a strong foothold in services and construction, working on housing, infrastructure, and roads in the Principat.
