Andorra Day-Trippers Spend Double Overnight Tourists on Shopping
A survey of 900 visitors shows day-trippers outspending overnight tourists consistently, driven by competitive prices and retail variety, while both groups rate local commerce highly for safety and quality.
Key Points
- Day-trippers averaged €113.14 daily on shopping vs. €67 for tourists in summer
- 84.9% tourists and 82.4% day visitors made or planned purchases
- Day visitors focused on Pas de la Casa, Sant Julià; tourists on Andorra la Vella
- High ratings: safety 9.4/10 from tourists; 85%+ would recommend shopping
Day-trippers in Andorra spent an average of €113.14 on shopping per person per day during the summer, more than double the €67 average for overnight tourists, according to the ninth wave of the Commerce Observatory survey covering July to September.
The study, based on responses from 900 visitors, found that 84.9% of tourists and 82.4% of day visitors had made purchases or planned to do so. While purchase rates were similar, day-trippers consistently outspent tourists across seasons. Summer and winter figures showed some moderation, as visitors spread spending across shopping, dining, leisure, and—for tourists—accommodation.
Motivations varied by group. Tourists were drawn by Andorra as a destination overall, concentrating purchases in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. Day visitors prioritized competitive prices and retail variety, focusing spending in Pas de la Casa, Sant Julià de Lòria, and Andorra la Vella.
Perceptions of local commerce remained strongly positive. Tourists gave safety a 9.4 out of 10, urban spaces 9.3, service quality 8.8, product quality 8.7, and shop variety 8.5. Day visitors rated safety at 9.1, urban spaces at 8.7, and both product quality and service at 8.4.
These findings, presented today at Chamber of Commerce headquarters, underscore Andorra's position as a shopping destination. Some 69.7% of tourists and 84.8% of day visitors said they would recommend it. Chamber president Josep Maria Mas led the event, attended by members of the Private Tourism Sector Council, retail associations, Tourism and Commerce Minister Jordi Torres, and Presidency, Economy, Labour and Housing Minister Conxita Marsol.
