Encamp council has begun renovation work to waterproof Funicamp square, awarding the €205,689.37 project, including VAT, to Construccions Purroy.
The effort covers roughly 500 square metres, aiming to replace the existing system, ensure full watertightness, and fix leaks affecting lower levels in recent years. Crews will proceed in phases with segregated work zones to maintain a safe pedestrian route and constant access to the Funicamp car park.
The two-month timeline starts after the summer season and targets completion before winter, avoiding disruptions to Funicamp operations. Measures will limit dust and noise amid high footfall and surrounding businesses.
Initial steps involve stripping the current pavement, intermediate layers, and old waterproofing, followed by substrate cleaning. A continuous hot-sprayed polyurethane layer will then coat the entire area, including concrete structures and the metal bridge spanning the Aixec river. This flexible, jointless material accommodates structural shifts for simpler maintenance.
Workers will next apply an asphalt layer over about 85% of the square—formerly granite-paved—while rebuilding other areas with existing wooden decking and rubber surfacing. Printed asphalt will provide the final finish, along with improved, more accessible entry to the Tourist Office, which remains in its current location.
The scope includes preparatory work, demolition, support repairs, waterproofing installation, surface reinstatement, and final watertightness tests.
