Key Points

  • 5G covers 91% population via 44 sites, doubling speeds to 2.5 Gbps down/150 Mbps up.
  • Fibre upgraded to 10 Gbps symmetric for businesses; residential plans boosted (e.g., 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps).
  • Proven in events like La Vuelta; AI automates tasks, 100% green energy used.
  • Social initiatives include child safety SIMs, gender equality, cybersecurity via Diquital.

Andorra Telecom has completed its nationwide 5G upgrade with the 3.5 GHz band, achieving high-speed coverage for 91% of the population across 44 sites including Encamp, Anyós, La Massana, Arinsal, Santa Coloma, Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa, Canillo and Soldeu. The rollout, which began in June with central preparations and fibre reorganisations, doubled base station capacity and speeds without replacing existing infrastructure.

The enhancement proved reliable under pressure, handling heavy traffic at La Vuelta in Pal and the Small States Games opening at Estadi Nacional. All compatible devices can now access doubled 4G speeds—up to 2.5 Gbps downloads and around 150 Mbps uploads—along with lower latency and stable connections in crowded urban areas, commercial zones, ski resorts and events. Xavier Agulló, head of marketing and sales, called it a critical project to meet rising data demands, ensuring greater capacity and smoother performance in high-traffic scenarios.

Alongside mobile advances, the company modernised its fibre network to support 10 Gbps for all households and businesses, limited only by customer equipment like routers or network cards. The €4 million upgrade replaced outdated gear without tariff increases. Businesses gained symmetrical 2.5 Gbps professional service, previously capped at 1 Gbps. Residential plans shifted: 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps, 700 Mbps to 1 Gbps, and 300 Mbps to 500 Mbps, guaranteeing at least 500 Mbps everywhere. Jordi Nadal, director general, noted users would experience seamless daily operations, from instant game downloads and sharper video calls to frictionless multi-device use in homes.

This follows the initial 2021 5G phase, with radio deployment now finished and the core network—for features like network slicing for emergencies or industrial applications—planned later once local needs emerge. Coverage prioritises populated areas, with 4G or lower-speed 5G in remote mountains.

Andorra Telecom also advances AI for efficiency, automating internal tasks—a technical process cut from a morning to 15 minutes—and public services like the 111 line, which handled over 1,000 after-hours calls. About 100 staff use tools such as OpenAI for analysis, with protections for sensitive data.

Sustainability measures feature 100% green energy from FEDA, a smaller vehicle fleet with more electrics, and remote work promotion. Social efforts target gender equality in tech, digital wellbeing and child safety via youth SIMs blocking inappropriate sites and parental WiFi controls. Subsidiary Diquital manages cybersecurity and automation for the company and local businesses.
